Why We Love It
One of the best souvenirs from Kyoto is the handmade Japanese fan. This Kyo-Uchiwa or Kyoto-style Flat Fan is the creation of Aiba, the prestigious Kyoto fan maker established over 300 years ago in 1689.
Epitomizing the finest Kyoto craftsmanship, everything from processing the bamboo, which form the ribs of the fan, to cutting and laying the paper, is done entirely by hand.
The 69 intricate bamboo ribs are made from Tanba bamboo aged four or five years, while the paper is handmade by renowned Echizen Yatsuo washi specialists. The buttery smooth handle is crafted from local hemlock and cedar wood.
Kyo-Uchiwa fans are a traditional ceremonial fan once used by Kyoto aristocrats and Buddhist monks. This Kyo-Uchiwa Fan includes a bamboo display stand making it perfect for both home décor and gifts.
